NBC's Green is Universal
WOW.
First it was Fox's Bones and the CW's Top Model... now NBC has jumped on the bandwagon, and how!
I was watching this week's The Office on my DVR last night, only to discover NBC's Green is Universal campaign. Apparently the head honcho mandated that all the shows include some green theme.
I was rolling my eyes, but I am also kind of excited. If pop culture can sell mainstream culture the green movement, then it will get even easier and cheaper to be green... maybe.
I think that it will still be hard. After all, it is being sold, which leads naturally in this consumerist era to "buy new stuff to be green!" It's a slippery slope, but I hope that those of us who aren't just trying to sell-sell-sell will be able to use this new pop development to our advantage to affect real attitude change.
aside: my favorite part of the NBC green site is about how to have a green wedding. It totally made me smile :) Also, shout out to my brother, who has used a push mower - we actually have one at my parents' house.

How to have a GREEN WEDDING?! That's a great idea! I wish this type of information was around when I got married. Love this blog!!!
I'm always a bit skeptical when the mainsream starts harping about the stuff i think is important. Like when the government and I agree on something - gives me chills. anyway, think the networks and green is nothing more than a ploy to make money but I think it may actually be doing good. I heard an old, fat, housewife (like me) in the Kroger talking about whick toilet paper would be better for the folks down stream. Now I got to say that the toilet paper is the last thing the folks downstream should be worried about, but at least it was a 'green' comment overheard in real life. She wasn't trying to impress anyone or be something that she was not, but was honestly thinking about it. Interesting at the least. Lisa T
I agree - probably the NBC green thing is a ploy to make money, but I'm thinking that what will happen is that it will sort of burrow into peoples' brains and when they buy toilet paper it will pop up, and they'll think "how can i make the right choice here?" You know how commercials get stuck in your head? I mean, the Empire Carpet jingle is forever lodged in my brain, sadly. Well, maybe the green thing will take up residence there, too!
granted, it would be better if she didn't use toilet paper (check out this post at living simple - i think i could do this with 75% of my trips to the bathroom), but maybe if she's thinking about toilet paper, she'll start flushing the toilet less, too, and maybe it will snowball.
